Begun in 1966 as a private recreational lake community by developer R. T. Crow, Lake St. Louis has blossomed into one of the best places to live in the Midwest. Since Lake St. Louis’s growth has been planned since its inception, the city retains high-quality and diverse housing, abundant and varied recreational opportunities and thoughtfully planned residential and commercial areas. Lake St. Louis today is one of the fastest growing cities in Missouri.
Recreation and entertainment opportunities abound in and around Lake St. Louis. Its two large lakes are used for water sports and swimming, and sunbathing on their shores is also popular. In July, “Music on the Lake” offers family entertainment in the form of blues, classical, tropical, Motown and country music. The National Equestrian Center hosts various shows and competitions. America’s Exposition Park, an indoor exhibition arena, offers space for banquets and meetings as well as dog shows, merchandise exhibitions and gymnastic competitions.
Lake Forest Country Club is an elegant, appealing country club, situated on 150 acres of lush hills. The country club offers a clubhouse, tennis courts and a swimming pool, as well as a prized 18-hole golf course. Designed by Gary Kern, Lake Forest’s golf course has hosted the PGA Nike Gateway Classic Tour, the USGA Senior Open Qualifier and the Gateway PGA Section Championship.
Lake St. Louis offers unparalleled educational opportunities. Home to superb elementary, middle and high schools, the community is also close to several prestigious universities, including Washington University, University of Missouri and Webster University. Specialty universities are also accessible, including Lewis & Clark Vocational Technical School, Logan College of Chiropractic and St. Charles College of Pharmacy.
The unique community of Defiance is located only minutes away from Lake St. Louis and a mere 30 minutes west of downtown St. Louis. Defiance is best known for being the frontiersman Daniel Boone’s last permanent home. The Daniel Boone Home is a four-story structure built between 1804 and 1810 and still features elements of life of that era, such as Rebecca Boone’s butter churn and sewing basket, a collection of flint lock “Long Rifles,” Daniel’s writing desk and the family dishes.
The adjoining Boonesfield Village is also a study in history for visitors. Besides the Boone Home, the village includes five other 19th century structures including a schoolhouse, a woodworker’s shop and a chapel. In September, the Daniel Boone Home and Boonesfield Village offer Pioneer Days, a two-day celebration of pioneer life.
Sugar Creek Vineyards and Winery also calls Defiance home. Located on the Katy Trail and overlooking the Missouri River, the winery allows visitors to enjoy its wines on the terrace surrounded by the vineyards. The winery also offers live music in the afternoons and evenings from July to September.
Lake St. Louis and Defiance are both ideally located near well-known local attractions. The nearby city of St. Charles is famous for its historic architecture and specialty stores and antiques. Rock, jazz and country stars grace the stage at Riverport -- one of America’s premier amphitheaters -- each summer. Of course, the city of St. Louis offers an endless slew of entertainment opportunities. From professional sports teams to the Gateway Arch to the St. Louis Symphony, there are attractions to satisfy anyone’s tastes.
